How to create a Nonogram

This editor allows you to create your own Nonogram puzzles, also known as "Griddlers" or "Paint by Numbers". The editor on this website checks if your puzzle has more than one solution. Only puzzles with a unique solution are accepted. In fact it is not that simple to create a good Nonogram with a unique solution that also looks good and solves nicely. Here are some hints you can follow while you create your puzzle.

1. Avoid this pattern

Avoid this pattern

Two solutionsA very common mistake is using this pattern in a puzzle. It usually leads to more than one solution, as you can see in the illustration. Avoiding this is not easy, as every diagonal line consists of such patterns.

A general rule to solve this problem, is to fill more cells and make lines "thicker". Instead of just pairs of cells touching only at the corners, try to add more black cells in between.

2. Fill in some of the white area

More white area often means more solutions. Using colored areas instead of solid lines makes puzzle creation a lot easier. So if your Nonogram is not solvable, try to fill in the image instead of just drawing an outline.

3. Choose an attractive image

Try to paint a nice picture to reward other puzzlers when they have solved the puzzle. You might use model pictures or icons to create your puzzles. Here are some dos and don'ts when choosing a motive:

  • do not create offensive puzzles
  • paint a recognizable picture, not just random points and lines
  • try to avoid symmetry as symmetric puzzles are generally boring to solve
  • do not paint puzzles with text or numbers only
  • avoid empty background, do not paint a 5x5 image in a 20x20 grid
  • do not paint dublicates or flipped versions of existing puzzles

Please note that we check every puzzle before activating it, so be sure to follow these guidelines.
